Focus Features' Insidious: Chapter 3, the third installment in the Insidious film franchise, is set for cinema showing on June 5. To herald the date, the studio has just launched the first official trailer for the film, described as "a twisted new tale of terror begins for a teenage girl and her family, predating the haunting of the Lambert family in the earlier movies and revealing more mysteries of the otherworldly realm The Further."

Franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell wrote, directed and co-starred in the new supernatural horror flick that will serve as a prequel to the two previous Insidious films. Joining Whannell in the main cast are Dermot Mulroney, Lin Shaye, Angus Sampson, Stefanie Scott, Steve Coulter, Hayley Kiyoko, Ashton Moio, and Ele Keats.

According to the film's summary, Insidious: Chapter 3 is set at a time before the haunting of the Lambert family which was the focus of the two previous Insidious movies. It reveals how the gifted psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) first reluctantly agreed to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl (Stefanie Scott) who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity. It introduces audience to the mysteries of the otherworldly realm 'The Further.'

The first film in the franchise, Insidious, made for $1.5 million and released in 2010, went on to gross $97 million worldwide while Insidious: Chapter 2 grossed $160 million worldwide and was made for $5 million. Both films, which were also written by Whannell, were directed by franchise co-creator James Wan. Predominantly a writer and an actor, the 37-year-old Whannell took over the directing job in the making of Insidious: Chapter 3 since partner Wan, also 37, is still not yet through with his helming duties for Fast & Furious 7.

Whannel and Wan have also partnered in the creation of the highly successful Saw film franchise which has already expanded with six sequels that have drawn close to $900 million at the box office worldwide.
