An In-depth Review of "Better Call Saul" Season 1 Episode 6, "Five O": Mike's Past Revealed
A review by TV Equals placed Mike on the spotlight. Episode 6 was dedicated to Mike Ehrmantraut to finally dig into his past.
During the last episode of "Better Call Saul", Mike being careful opens the door, bat in hand and surprised to see his visitors: Philadelphia cops. They invited him to the station and interrogated him for the murder of Fenske and Hoffman.
With episode 6, Mike was seen discussing how his son, Matty who was with the Philadelphia Police Force when died, to his daughter-in-law, Stacey. She was trying to learn from Mike what happened back in Philadelphia and what was Matty's connection to all these and telling her his son was not part of the crooked part of the force.
Matty, a straight cop wanted to blend in with the other guys so he probed on a crackhouse wherein the same cops who he wanted to win their trust, shot him. Mike, played by Jonathan Banks showed his grief when he lost his son and knowing that he was partly to blame because Matty followed the advice his father gave him.
This was how Mike told Stacey how an honorable cop his son was. Although Mike didn't tell the story to Stacey calmly, it was a perfect scene knowing that the Breaking Bad character keeps his cool even in any circumstance. He just wants Stacey to understand that Matty was not a bad cop and he will prove to her that he was murdered.
Flashback to Philadelphia was seen Mike meeting Hoffman and Fenske in a bar. Mike fakes being drunk and the two cops offered him a ride. During the ride, Mike rambles on how his son died and blames them for it. They pulled over to confront Mike and he kills the two with him also being shot.
The episode ends with Mike telling the real story to his daughter-in-law and sadly admitted how he killed the cops who murdered his son. He also said he did it to punish Matty's murderers.
