Cartoon Network on Thursday in a press statement announced that The Powerpuff Girls has been slated for a 2016 launch. Said the network: "ThePowerpuff Girls reboot will include an all-new television series produced by Cartoon Network Studios and a full licensing program slated to roll out across all regions. One of the network's most enduring original series, The Powerpuff Girls, which debuted on Cartoon Network in 1998, earned two Emmy Awards, five nominations and countless animation honors throughout its 78-episode run. The Powerpuff Girls centers on three sugar-coated superheroes -- Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup -- whose mission in life alternates between going to school, fighting crime, winning at hopscotch and saving the world before bedtime. Emmy and BAFTA award winner Nick Jennings (Adventure Time) is on board as executive producer."

Created by animator Craig McCracken, The Powerpuff Girls follows the adventures of Professor Utonium's Buttercup, Blossom and Bubbles as they save the city of Townsville from various threats of destruction from super villains and giant monsters. Each of the girls has a color: Blossom is pink, Bubbles is blue, and Buttercup is green. Also, the girls have to deal with normal real-life issues young children face, including sibling rivalries, loose teeth, personal hygiene, going to school, bed wetting, and so forth. The Powerpuff Girls were created by Professor Utonium in an attempt "to create the perfect little girls" using a mixture of "sugar, spice, and everything nice." However, he accidentally spilled a mysterious substance called "Chemical X" into the mixture. As a result, he created not one "perfect little girl" but three distinct little girls with each possessing one of the above elements dominating her personality, and granting all three superpowers.

At last year's Licensing Expo in Las Vegas, the network's chief content officer Rob Sorcher already revealed that a reboot of the long-running cartoon TV series is in the works. He told reporters then, "The original 'Powerpuff Girls' was a franchise phenomenon for Cartoon Network, paving the way for a new generation of innovative storytellers and enthusiastic fans worldwide. We are calling these girls back into action based upon an overwhelming demand for sugar, spice and Chemical X."
