Simon Pegg who plays Engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in the Star Trek reboot franchise, will write the script for the upcoming third installment of the franchise.

This news had been confirmed over last week by The Guardian.

Pegg will be working alongside Doug Jung as scriptwriters and at the same time, the actor will also reprise his role as Scotty, the miracle-working, Enterprise-anthropomorphising chief engineer of the spacecraft, Enterprise.

Jung, on the other hand, had written the script of the crime caper Confidence.

Pegg had a string of co-written works before with Edgar Wright such as the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy of films, Shaun of the DeadHot Fuzz, The World's End and the comedy series Spaced.

The British actor's only sole written script was Run, Fatboy, Run, which received lukewarm reviews.

The movie will now be helmed by Fast and Furious director Justin Lin, after JJ Abrams left for Star Wars 7 and Roberto Orci dropping out due to creative differences. Orci will still act as the producer though.

Pegg's friend, Wright, also a director was almost asked to take the director's chair after Orci dropped out, but it was eventually Lin who had been offered the role.

The planned release date for Star Trek 3 will be on July 2016.
