CBS' NCIS Season 12 episode 12 airing Tuesday, January 13, is entitled "The Enemy Within." Directed by James Whitmore, Jr. from a script written by George Schenck with Frank Cardea, it will take off from where the show left last week.

In episode 11, just before the closing scenes, Gibbs' ex-wife Diane (Melinda McGraw) was killed by a sniper's shot. The terrorist Sergei Michnev (Alex Veadov), to avenge the death of Ari Haswari (Rudolf Martin), his 'family,' hatches a plot to make Gibbs suffer the same sense of loss as he feels. He goes on a killing spree patterned after those that happened to persons closest to Gibbs in the past to lure him in. First he copies the crime scene found in the death of Director Jenny Shepard (Lauren Holly). Then he kills someone in the same manner as how Mike Franks (Muse Watson) was killed. Finally, he kills Diane in the same way that Agent Kate Todd (Sasha Alexander) died - with a sniper shot to the head.

FBI Agent Tobias Fornell (Joe Spano) is set to join Gibbs and his team in hunting down Michnev. Diane is also the ex-wife of Fornell and the mother of his daughter Emily. As part of the effort to track down Michnev, the NCIS team searches for a home-grown terrorist after a rescue mission in Syria reveals an American was involved in the capture of a social worker. Abby (Pauley Perrette) apparently finds out from evidence that there was an American working with the terrorist.

On a lighter note, McGee (Sean Murray) and Bishop (Emily Wickersham) began noticing DiNozzo's (Paul Weatherly) unusual behavior following ATF Agent Zoe Keates' (Marisol Nichols) reemergence at NCIS to help in the case. Rocky Caroll as Director Vance, David McCallum as Dr. Ducky Mallard, and Brian Dietzen as Jimmy will also be seen in the show.

Aside from Spano and Nichols, others guesting for episode 12 are Lindsey Kraft (Sarah Goode), Stephanie Erb (Rachel Nasry), Arlen Escarpeta (Former Army Specialist Randall White), Sterling Macer, Jr. (Homeland Assistant Director Chris Hegarty), Rachel DiPillo (Chelsea), Darryl Alan Reed (Cabbie), Kevin Joy (Kyle Nasry), Zadran Wali (Imam Musa Ibn Hasan), A.J. Castro (Seal Team Leader) and Paul A. Magers (Newscaster).
