Pan stars Hugh Jackman as the villain Blackbeard and Garett Hedlund as the heroic Captain Hook
Warner Bros.' Pan, a new take on the origin story of Peter Pan, Captain Hook and the other characters created by J.M. Barrie in his classic stories, is set for release to US theaters on July 24. Directed by Joe Wright from a screenplay by Jason Fuchs, the film follows the story of an orphan who is spirited away to the magical Neverland where he finds both fun and dangers, and ultimately, where he discovers his destiny - to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter Pan.
Pan stars Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard, Garrett Hedlund as Captain James Hook, Nonso Anozie as Bishop, Amanda Seyfried as Mary Darling, Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily, Adeel Akhtar as Mr. Smee, Levi Miller as Peter Pan, Jack Charles as The Chief Great Little Panther, Taejoo Na as Kwahu, Kathy Burke as Mother Barnabas, Leni Zieglmeier as Wendy Darling, Paul Kaye as Mutti Voosht, Emerald Fennell as Commander, Jack Lowden as Dobkin, Jimmy Vee as Lofty, Julian Seager as Livingston, and Cara Delevingne as the mermaid. The film is now at the post-production stage and the first official trailer may already be accessed at the studio's Pan site and on Youtube.
Pan is the latest in the long line of movies based on J M Barrie's books and plays, including the 1924 Peter Pan silent film released by Paramount Pictures starring Betty Bronson in the title role and a 2003 version starring Jeremy Sumpter in the lead. There is also the 1991 film Hook, starring Robin Williams as a grown up Peter. Then, there is also the 2004 drama Finding Neverland, where Johnny Depp was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Barrie, which is about how the author's relationship with Sylvia Llewelyn Davies led to the creation of Peter Pan. As with all previous versions, the casting of a non-Native American in the Tiger Lily role in Pan has been met with controversy.
