Jamie Foxx has been out promoting his new movie Annie, which opens December 19th and he made an appearance on Late Show with David Letterman on Thursday (December 11) in New York City.

Letterman soon had the 47-year-old actor chatting though about why he changed his real name, which is Eric Marlon Bishop. It turns out it was just because he wanted to get more stage time at the comedy clubs when he was starting out. Check out the funny exchange and hear his story in the video above.

Annie is directed by Will Gluck and produced by Jay-Z and Will Smith. It stars Quvenzhané Wallis in the title role and Foxx in the role of Will Stacks, an update of Daddy Warbucks. It is a contemporary adaptation of the musical of the same name, which was based upon the 1924 comic strip Little Orphan Annie by Harold Gray. Annie is set to release to theaters next weekend on December 19th.

Foxx was known as just a mostly a comedian until he took on the role of Ray Charles in the 2004 film Ray which earned him the Academy Award and BAFTA Award for Best Actor as well as the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a musical or comedy. The same year, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the action film Collateral

In 2012, Foxx starred in the highly praised film Django Unchained, and in 2014, he played the villain Electro in blockbuster The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
