Wicked musical rumored to hit the big screen and will be the highlight of the 2016 release calendar
The critically and commercially successful musical, Wicked, is rumored to be adapted on the big screen. The Tony award winner musical has a speculated date of release on 2016.
Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry was in talks to helm the film. Producer Marc Platt, on the other hand, said that, "the movie of Wicked is still a number of years down the line," according to Den of Geek.
At the conclusion of Screen Film Summit on December 2, it has been noted that Wicked will be the highlight of 2016. This simply means that if the producers targets the 2016 release date, shooting will commence as early as 2015. Universal, for that matter, has not spilled any beans on the project yet.
The Broadway musical had been in the planning stages for so many years now and we are hoping that this could finally be realized very soon.
The musical is based on the 1996 novel by Gregory Maguire, which is an alternate adaptation of the classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum.
The story dwells on the origins of the witches of Oz, Elphaba and Glinda the Good. In the 2013 movie, Oz the Great and Powerful, Glinda the Good was played by Michelle Williams. Mila Kunis played Theodora, who resembles Elphaba, as the green-skinned witch.
The song Defying Gravity is the signature song of the hit musical. The song is a solo mostly sung by Elphaba. Frozen's Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, originally recorded the song on November 10, 2003.
Speaking of Menzel, who sang the addictive hit song "Let it Go" and who voiced Elsa in the movie, won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical by playing Elphaba.
The question now is, who would be playing Elphaba and Glinda the Good?
