Frozen Writer and Co-director Jennifer Lee Working on Disney Version of "A Wrinkle of Time"
Is it possible to relive the magic of Frozen?! Jennifer Lee, the writer and co-director of the Oscar-winning hit, will be writing the screenplay for the Disney version of A Wrinkle in Time. It's the classic adventure story with characters named Mrs. Who, Mrs. Which and Mrs. Whatsit.
The time-traveling fantasy written by Madeleine L'Engle in 1962, was one of Lee's favorites, reports Variety. It was the first novel in L'Engle's "Time Quartet" series.
Lee pitched the idea to Disney, and was probably granted the project because of her creative ability to highlight strong female characters, according to Variety. Who didn't feel empowered after Frozen? Meg, the main character in A Wrinkle In Time, refuses to give up the search for her scientist father so it will be exciting to see how Lee envisions the character.
In 2003, there was a Disney made-for-TV movie for A Wrinkle in Time but it was not met with success and author Madeleine L'Engle, who died in 2007, was not a fan. In an exclusive interview with Newsweek in 2004, L'Engle shared her opinion on the film: "I expected it to be bad, and it is."
L'Engle, like Meg, was perseverant. "I kept on writing because that's what I had to do. I was compelled not to stop," shared L'Engle with Newsweek, explaining how the early rejections did not hinder her work.
A director hasn't been officially named for the upcoming film, so there's time for fans of the novel to revisit it for nostalgia and for curious readers to give it a go.
