Shayne Lamas And Nik Richie Open Up About The Death Of Their Son
Shayne Lamas and Nik Richie are speaking out about the removal of their son to save the life of Lamas in their first interview following the former reality star's terrifying medical ordeal.
Losing their son was something Lamas and Richie never saw coming, but when forced to chose between his dying wife and their unborn son, Richie made the decision to have doctors remove his son in effort to safe Lamas' life.
In a new interview with In Touch Weekly, the couple is opening up about the devastating circumstances.
“My son had to be removed to save my life,” Lamas revealed.
Prior to collapsing at her Orange County home, Lamas' son was “healthy” at 20-weeks-old, but growing outside of her uterus and attached to her bladder. After he punctured her placenta, causing her to collapse, Lamas was rushed to a local hospital where she underwent an emergency hysterectomy to have him removed, as well as her uterus and half her bladder.
“The doctors hadn’t seen anything like it,” Lamas said.
At the time this was taking place inside her, Lamas was in a medically induced coma. When she awoke, she was given the sad news.
"I screamed from the top of my lungs. You never think something like this will happen to you. I felt like someone hit me again and again and again,” Lamas recalled.
Meanwhile, Richie was forced to make the hardest decision of his life.
“The doctors told me, ‘The baby is killing her. We have to remove the fetus or Shayne is going to die,’” he said. “It wasn’t a miscarriage. It was them having to kill our child to save my wife.”
Luckily, during surgery, doctors were able so save Lamas' ovaries, which means she and Richie can still reproduce -- something that is extremely exciting for Lamas.
"I'll be able to give my eggs to a surrogate," she said. "I absolutely will have more kids."
