'Orange Is The New Black' Star Michelle Hurst Awakes From 16-Day Medically Induced Coma
Michelle Hurst, of the Netflix series Orange Is The New Black, has woken up from the medically induced coma she was placed under following a car accident weeks ago.
According to a fundraising page set up for Hurst, Hurst was involved in a serious accident in December and has been under the care of doctors at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital's ICU ever since.
"Michelle Hurst was in a bad car accident just before the holidays. She had major injuries so the doctors put her in a medically induced coma to avoid movement while they did multiple surgeries near her spine. She is out of the coma (after 16 days) and has opened her eyes!" the page's announcement read. "We can't send flowers yet because she is in ICU at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital. So we have set up a fundraising page. All the money will go through Michelle's sister to help pay for her medical expenses & time off of work."
Then, in a Jan. 16 update, the fundraiser page said, "Michelle is the ICU. We can't send flowers or visit, only family. She is progressing slowly, but progressing! She is out of the medically induced coma & is responsive."
Also yesterday, Natasha Lyonne tweeted to her Twitter fans, saying, "Please give what you can to help Michelle Hurst - the amazing actress who plays Ms. Claudette on OITNB."
Taylor Schilling also tweeted for the cause. "Pls send love & good wishes 2 @OITNB Michelle Hurst (Miss Claudette). if u can, help us raise money 4 her recovery," she wrote, also on Twitter.
The fundraiser will be active for 19 more days and has currently raised $13,406 out of the $20,000 needed.
