American Idol's Crystal Bowersox Comes Out as Bisexual, Releases New Song
American Idol alum Crystal Bowersox announced that she would be getting divorced in May of 2013 after less than three years of marriage to husband Brian Walker, and now, she's revealing new details about her personal life in a series of new interviews.
"I've been bisexual for as long as I can remember," the 28-year-old said during a new interview with Good Day L.A. "I remember being made fun of in junior high for that. It was something that was shameful, and it really shouldn't be."
"The more people who come out who are in the public eye, the better chance some high school student has to love and accept themselves," she continued in an interview with Greg in Hollywood.
To show her support for the LGBT community, Crystal even released a new song about letting one's sexuality be known, which was titled, "Coming Out for Christmas."
"I think 40 percent of the youth homeless population is LGBTQ, and it's simply because they're not accepted by their families. They're kicked out of their homes, they feel shame and guilt. I just feel like that's not what the holidays are about," she explained. "The song is about being with your family regardless of sexual orientation and you could even throw political views in there. The song is about practicing tolerance and acceptance."
In addition to speaking (and singing) out in her support, Wetpaint is reporting that Crystal will also be donating proceeds from the song to The Trevor Project, a non-profit organization which provides suicide prevention services to LGBT youth.
