Oprah Winfrey: Why I Never Wanted to Raise Children
Oprah Winfrey is one of the most powerful women in the world, but she made the deliberate decision not to be a mother.
The Hollywood Reporter named the media mogul as one of the most powerful women in entertainment. At 59, she previously joked that her "eggs are dying on the shelf". Winfrey shared with the magazine why she did not regret having children.
"If I had kids, my kids would hate me," Winfrey said. "They would have ended up on the equivalent of the Oprah show talking about me; because something [in my life] would have had to suffer and it would've probably been them."
Winfrey did have a brush with pregnancy when she was younger. At the age of 14, she gave birth to a boy that died a few weeks later. The media titan said that her goals in life changed in comparison to those of her best friend, Gayle King.
"Gayle [now a mother of two] was the kind of kid who, in seventh grade home ec class, was writing down her name and the names of her children," Winfrey said. "While she was having those kind of daydreams, I was having daydreams about how I could be Martin Luther King."
