Tom Hanks has Type 2 Diabetes, PEOPLE reported Tuesday.

The Oscar award winning actor appeared on the Late Night with David Letterman on Monday evening. He revealed that he was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. The 58-year-old described his condition as controllable.

"I went to the doctor, and he said, 'You know those high blood sugar numbers you've been dealing with since you were 36? Well, you've graduated! You've got Type 2 diabetes, young man,' " Hanks said.

Hank paid a visit to the late night talk to promote Captain Phillips. The film is about a real life hero captain who tangled with Somali pirates. During the appearance, the Philadelphia actor looked notably smaller. Letterman joked that he looked good for being a new grandfather. Hanks accepted the compliment and then revealed the status on his health. He used humor to deflect the severity of his condition.

"My doctor said, 'Look, if you can weigh as much as you weighed in high school you will essentially be perfectly healthy and not have Type 2 diabetes.' and I said to her, 'Well, I'm going to have Type 2 diabetes,' " he said with a laugh.

"I weighed 96 pounds in high school," he explained. "I was a very skinny boy!"
