Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones Separate : REPORT
Michael Douglas and his wife Catherine Zeta Jones have decided to separate, PEOPLE reported Wednesday.
The couple, married since 2000, have two children together: Dylan, 13, and Carys, 10. The Hollywood actors haven't been photographed together since April 22 and sources told the publication that the two have decided to take some time apart. At this time, neither party had any intention of filing for divorce or legal separation.
"They're taking a break," a source said.
Sources said that the past three years have dealt a blow to the marriage. During this time, 68-year Douglas battled cancer and his eldest son from a previous marriage was sentenced to jail for dealing drugs. The 48-year-old actress has been open about her bout with bipolar II disorder. Earlier this year, she sought treatment once more for the condition.
"The stress has taken a toll on their marriage," a friend said.
Other sources said that the decision for the couple to have a trial separation occurred after Douglas returned from the Cannes Film Festival in May. Despite the two of them taking time apart, their children would remain their top priority.
"They want the best for their kids, no matter what happens," a friend said.
