Robin Thicke: 'Blurred Lines' Singer To Be Sued By Marvin Gaye Family
The family of Marvin Gaye blasted Robin Thicke as exploiting the Motown legend's legacy and hinted that they may sue, The Huffington Post reported Thursday.
Marvin Gaye's son, Marvin Gaye III, appeared on TMZ Live Wednesday. He spoke out about Thicke filing suit against the family over the success of his megahit, Blurred Lines. Thicke filed a lawsuit on August 16 to prevent the family of Marvin Gaye from collecting royalties on his summer blockbuster. He wanted a judge to determine that there were no similarities between his song and Gaye's hit Got to Give It Up.
Gaye III said that he was not pleased by Thicke's actions.
"Our point is that there's a way to do business and a way not to do business. We're not happy with the way he went about doing the business, let alone suing us over something where he clearly got his inspiration from at the least. That's caused my family a lot of due duress, and myself also. I'm under kidney failure, as well as I'm promoting my own album. I have better things to do than to be sitting here trying to defend my father's legacy, which I'm glad to do cause that's my position," he said.
Gaye III said that anyone who listed to Thicke and his father could pick up on the similarities. Gaye III said that the lawsuit would not exist if Thicke were confident that he did not lift the song in the first place. He responded in curt manner over whether he'd bring suit himself.
"My counsel is right now in the process of taking care of business, and like I said, once again I'm here to uphold my father's legacy," he said.
