Veteran actor Dick Van Dyke is recovering after his car caught fire on the 101 Freeway in Calabasas, Calif. on Monday, Aug. 19.
The officers began receiving calls about an old man slumped over behind the wheels of a Jaguar around 2 p.m.,the Associated Press reported. The CHP Southern Division told E! News, "Around 2 p.m. today we received a call that a car was on fire...there were reports that the person behind the wheel of the Jaguar was slumped over the wheel."
"We were told that there were nurses on the scene helping him. CHP and the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the call," they added.
The 87-year-old actor was helped by other people in the scene even before the emergency respondents arrived. California Highway Patrol officer Saul Gomez told AP that the actor was not treated at the scene.
Erik Scott, Spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department, confirmed that they responded to the scene and hypothesized that "it is possible that a flat tire may have ignited and the car went up in flames."
Van Dyke's melted car," said wife Arlene Van Dyke on Twitter. "He's fine thank God!!" Arlene also posted a Vine video of the traumatizing incident that showed her husband with his car that has been reduced to a charred on the freeway with police. The dialogue in the six-second video was mostly incomprehensible except for a question from a California Highway Patrol officer saying: "What do you want to do with it?"
