Is Selena Gomez The New Miley Cyrus? Her New Movie 'Spring Breakers' Is Pretty Raunchy
There comes a time when every Disney starlet must shed her good girl image, Selena Gomez's moment has finally arrived. However, the question remains, just how far has she gone?
The 20-year-old cutie's newest film "Spring Breakers" debuted at the Venice film festival this Wednesday and is far from the wholesome movies the actress has been involved in. Directed by Harmony Korine, the raunchy film recounts the story of four female friends, starring (Gomez, her fellow Disney starlet Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine - the director's wife) who go on a drug, alcohol, and sex-induced binge on spring break.
Although Reuters describes Gomez's character, Faith, as "the least wild of the group", the starlet admits her role will shock her younger audiences.
"Obviously I know that coming from Disney Channel gives you kind of a brand in a way," she told reporters in Venice after the film was streamed.
"People do put a label on you. I know that I have younger fans, and this is an opportunity for myself to kind of grow. It is a little shocking, I think, for the younger audiences ... but I think it was right for me."
The actress credits Harmony for helping her through the uncouth scenes. "I did things I didn't even know I could do on the movie," she said, " and I do think it was because I trusted Harmony."
The fact of the matter is, Gomez is a young adult and with maturity comes more mature roles. We don't see her veering in the ways of Miley Cyrus as long as she continues to comport herself in a ladylike manner and refrain from tweeting every aspect of her personal affairs - which she has seldom done.
The pint-sized beauty has rejected racier roles because she feels she isn't ready to cross that path just yet.
"I just didn't think I was ready for it, and I do think that Faith is right for me at this time in my career and in my life. Of course eventually I'm going to kind of work my way up to that I think," she added.
Apparently, Robbie Collin of the Daily Telegraph thinks "Spring Breaker" could have pushed the racy enveloped much further.
"Beneath its Terry Richardson-esque porn chic surface, Spring Breakers is no racier than a mainstream Hollywood teen comedy, and Korine doesn't seem to know what to do with his film's incredibly timely, potentially dangerous premise," he wrote in a three-star review.
