Fans happy that Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels were going to reunite for a sequel to "Dumb and Dumber" just got dealt a blow of disappointment. Carrey has officially said no to the project.

"I would have thought "Dumb and Dumber To" was a no-brainer," Carrey said in a statement to ETOnline.com, "after all it's implied in the title."

However, it wasn't a no brainer to the studios, New Line and parent company Warner Bros., who "showed a lack of enthusiasm" for the sequel.

"Dumb and Dumber To" was set to start filming this fall with both Carrey and Daniels reprising their roles as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne. The first film grossed almost $250 million worldwide at the time of its release in 1994. However, a prequel of the movie "Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd," which Carrey and Daniels were not involved with only grossed $39 million worldwide.

The movie had it gone into production would have picked up in present day.

"It picks up today," Peter Farrelly, who co-wrote and co-directed the first film with his brother Bobby told Moviefone. "It's 17 or 18 years later. It's not like a month after that happened. It's today. And we explain what they've been doing all those years."

"We've always wanted to do a sequel," Peter Farrelly told ComingSoon.net. "Jeff always wanted to do it. We always wanted to do it. Jim was busy, but he called and said, 'We've got to do this thing again.' He had just watched 'Dumb and Dumber' and he said, 'This is the perfect sequel. Let's do it.'"
